‘Our boys’ll be camped down on the Owl Fork.’ ‘How about me going on ahead, Ma?’ Jeanie suggested. ‘I’ve got to tell Fernàn that he’s a father—again.’ ‘Go to it,’ Ma smiled.
‘Why’n’t you come along, Colin?’ the girl continued and eyed the three Texans at the fire with mock disgust. ‘It’s time these OD Connected yahoos did some work instead of just riding the rims.’ ‘Aye, that it is,’ Colin agreed. ‘How about it, Ma? I may be able to shoot another elk or something on the way.’ ‘Go to it,’ Ma grin
...ned. ‘I reckon Dusty and Mark can handle the remuda.’ ‘Why don’t you come and help us, April?’ Mark inquired.
‘You know what you can do with your horses,’ the blonde snorted. ‘I’m a big city gal and I just can’t wait to get back to one.’ ‘Now that’s a pity,’ Ma chuckled. ‘I was going to ask you to take on as cook for the outfit.’ Since leaving Fort Sawyer, April had handled the cooking to everybody’s satisfaction.

I'm really getting sick of the many references to "The Big Texan", a if he were 6'6" instead of 5'5 1/2" This nonsense about how he grows big, is Superman stuff and there are no telephone booths around. And the way the writer describes EVERYTHING, like his finger tightened on the trigger, he raised his arm and sighted sown the barrel, then the trigger began to descend, and when it hit the cap, the fulminate of mercury shot into the touch hole and ignited the powder, driving a ball .9435 of an ounce down the barrel, on its way it begins to increase speed with the force of .768 of an oz. of Peterson's De Luxe sifted gunpowder, and then it leaves the barrel. Travelling in an almost straight line before being pulled don an inch by gravity...etc.etc. ".....and more drivel.

Colin "began to blow"... The writer does not seem to know much about bagpipes, except that the sound is not very pleasant. This old ploy has been used in MNAY cheap novels for the same purposes.

Before a sound is uttered by the pipes, the player has to do more than "fill his lungs and begin to blow. He has to Fill the BAG first, then tuck it under his arm, if not there already, then, start using the chanter and the sounds will emerge.

The end of Chapter none shows that the Army Colonel, regardless of his kinship to the kilted Scot Colin, intended to give the horse contract to branch, even though he KNEW that Branch was a crook and brought in bad horses. Not much of an expert and should not have been in that position of authority
