M., while waves were very high, Whipple signalled, "Man overboard." (It was Chief Quartermaster Lee, swept off by a wave) . Reid circled and presently sighted two buoys, one flaming, dropped by Whipple, but saw nobody with them. After an hour Capt. Chandler s...ign- alled Whipple, "Do you see anything? If not, suggest we go ahead." No reply to this sugges- tion, and search continued another hour, when search was abandoned. Tip of Reid's mainmast snapped off and was secured; aerial down tem- porarily, but rigged it out again. Intercepted wireless message from Wenonah saying she had just lost overboard Lieut, (jg) Reuben Orey, U.
S. N. R. F., of Somerville, Mass. Report went to Washington via Cruiser Wheeling at Grassy Bay, Bermuda.
