They were all summer without tents, with but little bedding and few clothes (I copy from his letters). He men tions some sport in killing the buffaloes, which they encountered more than a thousand in a herd. They had a large variety of game, which would have been a great luxury with the accompaniment of salt, butter, or vegetables. He returned to Fort Leavenworth for the winter of 1857 and 1858.
