Hooper, with his family, worshipped until 1766, in the South Parish, in the church of his childhood, where his wife's father was ruling elder, and his own father was a deacon. In this church all of his children were christened. It is a tradi- tion in the family that in pleasant weather they walked to the church, a distance of five miles; and, when the snow was too deep, they were taken on an ox-sled. "April 1766: admitted to this church William Hooper, and wife Elizabeth Hooper: also Elizabeth wife of the minister. Mathew Merriam pastor. " In 1775 the little meeting-house at Blackberry Hill became divided on " the validity of infant baptism.
