What reading level is A Biography of Edmund Spenser book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The work is dedicated to Sir Philip Sidney. It waspublished in the winter of 1579-80. More than once in the course of it, Spenser refersto Tityrus as his great master. The twelfth eclogueopens thus: The gentle shepheard sat beside a springe All in the shadow of a bushye brere, That Colin height, which well could pype and singe, For hee of Tityrus his songs did lere. Tityrus, on E. K. 's authority, was Chaucer. It isevident from the language--both the words and verbalforms--used in this poem tha...t Spenser had zealouslystudied Chaucer, whose greatest work had appeared justabout two centuries before Spenser's first importantpublication. The work, however, in which he imitatesChaucer's manner is not the _Shepheardes Calendar_, buthis _Prosopopoia or Mother Hubberds Tale_, which hesays, writing in a later year, he had 'long sithenscomposed in the raw conceipt of my youth. ' The formand manner of the _Shepheardes Calendar_ reflected notChaucer's influence upon the writer, but the influenceof a vast event which had changed the face ofliterature since the out-coming of the _CanterburyTales_--of the revival of learning.
