In the summer of 1 800, another of the friends left this settlement; f two of those who had re- sided at Oneida, having previously gone there, The Indians made some improvement this year. A pair of oxen which they purchased were found very serviceable in drawing fire-wood, &c. As yet they had not begun to plough. A small school was again attended to, but the Indians not promoting the attendance of their children, no regular school was afterwards kept ; but instruction afforded to several of the... children at convenient opportunities. The friends settled at Genesangohta, in a letter dated Eighth month, 1801, say, " It is apprehended that a much greater proportion of useful labour has been performed the present season on this river, J than has heretofore been done in the same space of time; and the pru- dence manifested amongst the natives in ex- pending the present year's annuity, affords en- couragement to hope, that the labour and con- cern of the Society for their welfare, will not be fruitless : divers have purchased cows, &c.
