This pit lies north from what is now called Bear Hill. This was formely called Bears Hill, from the fact of its having been a noted place for the residence of those animals. Gov. Winthrop states in his history of Massachusetts, that he was travelling this way on a certain occasion, and stopped upon Bears Hill, to rest and refresh himself with food.
