Mr. John Carnes, of Boston, who was settled Dec. 17th, 1747. The order of exercises was as follows : Rev. Mr. Elliot, of Boston, made the Introduc- tory Prayer ; Rev. Mr. Prentice, of Charlestown, preached the Sermon; Rev. Mr. Emerson, of Maiden, gave the Charge; and Rev. Mr. Hobby, of Reading, gave the Right Hand of Fellowship. It was customary in those days for the minister to read the psalm to be sung, as is the practice at the present time. Af- ter reading the psalm it devolved on one of th...e deacons of the church to deal it out to the singers, a line or two at a time. On one occasion, after the psalm had been read, the good dea- con took the book and commenced dealing out the hymn ; it read as follows : — «' Spikenard, saffron, calamus, and cinnamon also, All incensed trees with aloes, And all chief spices grow, &c. The deacon found himself very soon entangled among so ma- ny spices and the minister arose to help him along, through the first line. The deacon again arose, but again the minis- ter w^as under the necessity of rising to help him along.
