Up to that date ten escorts introduced about 278,020 cz., the charges thereon amounting to £18,188. Escorts were continued up to December, 1853. From May to December, 1853, eight escorts brought onlj^ about 50,490 oz., on which a reduced charge of 6d. per ounce was made. It was estimated that the loss on escorts in 1853 amounted to £6,909.
