It has direct com- munication by railway with all parts of the State and Union, and has water transportation along the navigable portion of the Alabama and its tributaries. The Alabama is never closed by ice, and very rarely suffers from drought. Large steamers ply between Montgomery and Mobile during the entire year. I^arge steamers also ascend the Coosa River, as far as Wetumpka. About 75,000 bales of cotton are an- nually shipped from Montgomery.
