What reading level is A Companion to Dante book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Ten years later Theodor Heyse found in the Palatine MS. , which has since been much discussed, nine letters ascribed to Dante, seven of which had till then been quite unknown. In 1838 Witte wrote a full report of them, claiming the honour of the discovery on the ground that Heyse, who was at that time working in the Vatican Library, had at his request looked out for relics of Dante. In the joyful excitement of the discovery criticism was allowed to sleep, and the genuineness of the letters was ...accepted as a matter of course. Thus Alessandro Torri's edition of 1842 con- tained the respectable number of fourteen letters, which were taken as undoubtedly genuine. In course of time criticism awoke, and began soberly to rub its eyes. The consequence was that the abundance melted away until to-day it is seriously questioned whether we possess a single letter which can be undoubtedly ascribed to Dante. This / is not the place to enter into a full inquiry on the subject ; CHAP. VI THE LETTERS 343 for our purpose it must suffice to take a brief glance at the letters, and append a few remarks.
