And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the spirit, groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.'^ Here, then, we are certified by the apostle, that by the creation spoken of in this case, he means the whole creation, (or pasa ktisis, every creature.) In the first place, it "was made subject to vanity," — constituted mortal, and placed in a peccable state, — '*not willingly," not of its own choice ; the human species were not counselled as to the constitution in which they should be brought into being, or the world in which they should be placed ; — "but by reason of him who hath subjected the^ same, in hope."
