Thus fell the celebrated Mat, Pans * Thomas Becket, one of the moft daring, turbu- lent, vindictive, and ambitious priefts that ever devoted themfelves as miniflers to the ufurpation of the Roman fee, or attempted to aggrandize the church upon the ruins of civil government.
