To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
He chose the latter course for two reasons. First, he did not care to march back, with a certain fight, while he was out of forage, when a stubborn enemy could delay him suffi- ciently long to starve his command : second, having gone so tar it would hurt the morale of the whole campaign to recede. He marched down the old and now deserted Peninsula to Wliite- liouse landing, where gunboats and supplies awaited him, and rested in peace after his first raid. After a few days' repose, the cavalry c...orps marched up the Peninsula, and found the Union army drawn up near Hanover Court House. On the 2Sth May, Sheridan, with a division of the Sixth Corps and the cavalry, started off on the next flank movement of Grant, which ended at Cold Harbor. By succes- sive flanking movements, Grant's army had come in a slanting direction, all the way from Orange Court House, crossing suc- cessively the Rapidan, North Anna, South Anna, and Pamunkey, and now found itself just where McClellan was two years before, at Cold Harbor not twelve miles from the centre of Richmond.
