As the authority also and credit of tlie clergy depended much upon the high opinion which was entertained of the virtue and merit of the saints they had canonized and presented to the multitude as objects of religious veneration, it was necessary to amuse and surprise them l)y a variety of pompous and striking ceremonies, by images, processions, and similar inventions.
