On both her father's and her mother's side she owned a considerable " pedigree." The Colstons are a Lincolnshire family of Norman lineage, descended from Robert de Colston of Colston Hall. From them comes the famous Colston family of Bristol ; and from a sister of Edward Colston, the philanthropist, who married Sir William Hayman, and whose descendants afterwards assumed the name of Colston, comes the present-day family of the Colstons of Roundway Park, Wiltshire. These bear on their arms the "... two dolphins counter haurient respecting each other," which were likewise the arms of Elizabeth's father, Gabriel Colston the grocer. In the pedigree at the Heralds' College, Gabriel's father is given as Robert Colston of Corby, in the county of Lincoln ; and his MARRIED LIFE OF MICHAEL HICKS. 171 mother as Katherine, daughter and co-heiress of John Malory of Walton, in Leicestershire. Gabriel's wife, Alice Foxe, has a reference attached to her which takes us to a pedigree of the Foxes of Northampton- shire, and on which both she and her father are to be found.
