In countries, such as the United States, in which petro- leum is found abundantly, some illuminating gas is made from it by spraying the petroleum upon very hot fire bricks, as in the enriching of water gas.... Pintsch gas is made in this way by cracking petroleum oils, and is stored under pressure in cylinders for lighting railway cars. 5. Natural gas. In many regions of the United States, as well as in other countries, natural gas is obtained from wells drilled into a stratum holding the gas.
