It is singular that this construction which yields an excellent sense has been entirely overlooked, and the interpreta- tion of Chrys., etc., met with the objection that awoKa...TaXXdiai . . . ciTc TCL . . . c?Tc rd cannot mean to reconcile these two with one another. May it not be that the difficulty arises from attempting to turn what is practically a hypothetical statement into a categorical assertion ? St. Paul has in his mind throughout this part of the Epistle the teaching of the false teachers at Colossae, who knew, forsooth, all about the celestial hierarchy, with its various orders, some of which were doubtless regarded as not entirely in harmony with the Divine will.
