The common-sense principle is, that δέ does not neces- sarily occupy the second place, but the first jiossible place which the internal connexion of the sentence will admit of; see Klotz, Derar. Vol. 11. p.
378. viTo νόμον βφρου- ρούμΐ€θα κ.τ.λ.] 'we were ...kept invmrd shut up under the lain/' συ•/κ€κ\. being joined, not with eis ττίστιν (see follow- ing note), but, in a construction similar to that of the preceding verse, with ύττό νόμορ (Ann., al.): the law, in fact, is here (as αμαρτία in ver. 22) represented as a kind of gaoler into Avhose custody we were delivered ; see Koster, Stud. u. Krit. 1854, p. 316.
The meaning of φρουρεΐσθαι is thus not merely 'asservari' (Winer, Schott), much less 'obstringi ad obedientiam' (Bretsch.), but, as the definite ex- pression συ-γκεκλ.
