The critical examination that has just been made would appear to demonstrate that all the dates that have been considered likely for the birth of Columbus, drawn solely from Columbian sources, that is to say, from what he has said himself or state- ments traceable to him, are alike absolutely unacceptable. They all have the same origin, they all rest on equally authentic statements, having exactly the same value and being all, never...theless, contradictory. Undoubtedly there are some which are so opposed to what is likely that they may be dismissed without further discussion ; but the fact that there are others which are plausible, and which may be reconciled with what we undoubtedly know of the life of Columbus, is in no sense a guarantee for their accuracy, and several of the ar- guments come into this category.
How are we to make a choice among these ? Why should we eliminate one E 2 52 THE REAL BIRTH-DATE OF rather than another when they all proceed from the same source, and all raise equally the same serious objections ?
