A separation of thorium and zirconium from the cerium and yttrium elements is brought about by stirring thoroughly into a dilute solu- tion of the nitrates (containing tervalent cerium) an excess of freshly-prepared lead carbonate.
After 12 hours the hydrates of thoria, zirconia, and ferric oxide are completely precipitated, the hydroxides of aluminium, chromium, and uranium are partially deposited, whilst cerium, yttrium, and other rare earth metals remain in solution.
