It is pre- pared by heating resoycin with phthalic anhydride to 200' J C. , and may therefore be called Resorcin Phthalein, and is analo- gous to phenol phthalein. It forms dark brown crystals, insoluble in water, but soluble in weak alkaline solutions to a red solution, which, when dilute, has a splendid yellowish green fluorescence. So- luble in alcohol, the solution has a green fluorescence. Dyes wool and silk yellow, and the shades have a faint fluorescence, but it has little tinctorial value, its dyeing power being weak, and the shades fugi- tive.
