It is not for me to dwell on their applicability to my own feelings on this occasion. But in referring to the character of an aged member of this church, who has so lately been called away, I may speak of her, to you who have known her, as of a Mother iij Israel. Mary Hoffman, to whose beloved memory I dedicate this dis- course, was born at Red-Hook, ...in this state, on the 9th day of July^ 1743. Her parents* were respectable and sincerely pious; and by them her mind was early trained in the knowledge of God and of His holy religion. She was gifted by nature with a serene and amiable temperament, which by the power of the Divine Spirit was ripened * Martin Hoffman and Catharine Rutgers, into the constant exercise of all those Christian graces, that peculiar- ly adorn the female character. At the age of 23 she was married to the Rev. Dr. Archibald Laidlie,* one of the early ministers^ of this church.
