We are to use the first and the lust and every occasion which offers to oppose the extension of slave power. "* On the 10th of August, 1843, in the Senate of the United States, he said : — " My opposition to t
...he increase of slavery in this country, or to the increase of slave-representation, is general and universal. It has no refer- ence to the lines of latitude or points of the compass. I shall oppose all such extension at all times and under all circumstances, even against all inducements, against all supposed limitations of great interests, against all combinations, against all compromises. " He sought to gain the support of the Free Soilers in Mas- sachusetts, and encouraged their enterprise. Even when he denounced the nomination of General Taylor as " not fit to be made, " he declared that he could stand on the Buffalo Platform ; its Anti-Slavery planks were good sound Whig timber ; he himself had had some agency in getting them out, and did not see the necessity of a new organization.
