Finally, in respect to the moral condition of slaves, it should be remembered, that there are no laws regulating marriage among them. An apology for a marriage ceremony is sometimes attempted among the higher order of ' house servants ;' — is celebrated, perhaps, by a minister of the gospel or a civil magistrate ; but even 12 then, it has no legal validity, and may continue only so long as shall suit the caprice of the parties or the convenience of the master.
