These priests are said to have been commissioned to keep the bridges in repair as an indispen- sable part of their office. Being thus consigned to the priests,* there were Chapels annexed to them, on almost all our bridges of note, as at London, York, Durham^ Rochester, and many other places, which I cannot now recollect or particularise.
