It is of a yellowish green color; it has a strong, narcotic, andfoetid odor, with a bitter and extremely acrid taste.

"Mucilage, albumen, or gluten, extractive, a bitter principle, anessential oil, nitrate of potass, which occasions its deflagration, muriate of potass, and a peculiar proximate principle, upon which thevirtues of the plant are supposed to depend, and which has thereforebeen named _Nicotin_.
