While the boys had been on furlough they had spent their little money with a lavish hand, and I am not far out of the way when I say the entire party could not have produced ten dol- lars. The night was cold, and supper and shel- ter we must have. Arriving at a stage-stoppipg .place, we made our wants known, and explained to the landlord our financial condition. He kindly told us that if we had had money he would not have kept us, but, being in this condition, he would make us a shake-down on t...he floor and provide food for us, the best he had, and that when we received our first pay we could pay him rail of which we faithfully promised to do.
On March 10, after eating a hearty breakfast and again thanking our kind host, we proceeded 106 ^ DRUMMEB-BOY'S BIABY, on our way to La Crescent, where we arrived at noon. We were again compelled to make known to the landlord our poverty-stricken condition, and, after making him promises of good faith in our intention of paying him, we were told to go into the dining-room and get our din- ner, and if we ever thought it worth paying for we could send it to him.
