Rufus had not smoked cannabis or eaten hashish or swallowed “acid”—with heroin he had never experimented—since the expulsion from Ecalpemos. An addictive personality he might have, did have, but he knew where to stop. Rufus stopped at the rationed cigarettes and the half glass of vodka behind the curtain. He got up and opened the door for Mrs. Harding and she said, thank you so much, you don’t know how marvelous it is just to talk… .
