Two vessels were, con- sequently, ciiartered ; and the entire responsibility of defraying the expenses of such manumitted ...slaves, as mii;ht take passaj^e in them, was assumed by the Pennsylvania Society. The re?ult has been most cheering to the Friends of the African cause. Elliott Cresson, Esq. (a gentleman uho has exerted himself with great zeal and en- ergy for this object. ) writes : " My list of subscriptions to this fund, (which embraces all but the amount of about 8400, sent to the Treas- urer, or collected by Dr. Mitchell J is 85, 589 50, including £170, being the first payment on glTOO, subscribed in ten annual instal- ments — or, in other words, JJonalions, - - S3, 419 50 Suljscri/jtioHi - - 1, 700 GO This, of course, is independent of the accounts of Mr.
