He passed the first half of his life where he was born, on his father's farm in Washing- ton, and on the latter's death took the farm, buying out the interests of his brothers and sisters. Besides sturdy Puritan piety, he had one other prominent trait, musical taste and ability, being for many years leader of the choir in Washington church.
