Having experienced religion, he became, at the early age of nineteen, a minister of the Baptist Church in West Bridgewater. He then resolved to obtain a liberal education, and fitted himself f...or Brown University, which he entered the following year. He was graduated, with honor, in 1811; his part at the commencement exercises being an oration on " Curiosity guided by Reason and Common Sense the Source of Mental Improvement. " He after- wards took the degree of Master of Arts in course. On leaving college he returned to his native village to preach, but was prevented by ill health from a regular discharge of ministerial duties, and soon removed to Boston, where he established a private school at the West End, and was also for a few years a master in the old IMayhew School.
