As in the later works of other men of genius, but especially Goethe, a vein of serious contem- plation verging on mysticism runs through these last compositions of Beethoven, supplanting, in great measure, the pathos and emotion which distinguish his earlier works, and replacing clear, well-defined melody by richly developed poly- phonous and contrapuntal plirases.
