In the course of the thirty-three years during which this work has been published there have been twelve editors, namely, Messrs. Cogswell, Drake, Harris, ShurtleiF, Felt, Farrar, Trask, Whit- more, Nason, Hudson, Hoyt, and the present writer. Just one half of these, the first six in order of service, are dead, while the last six survive.
The Rev. William Cogswell, D. D. , the first editor, had charge of the Register one year. He had edited the " American Quarterly Register " and the " New Hampshire Repository, " periodicals large- ly devoted to antiquarian matters.
