FOELI On the faith of Passeri's statement that the trade of pot- making was imported into Pesaro by one Pedrini di Giovanni, a bocalihus of Forli, in 1396 — which might imply that the trade had been practised in the last-named town at a much earlier period — French writers have placed Forli on an equal rank with the towns which claim to hav...e been the cradle of majolica manufacture. At that time the study was still pass- ing through its incipient phases. Nothing has since come to light that would give any importance to a record which, no doubt, has reference to the establishment of some common pot- works. Yet several pieces, of undetermined provenance, have been pointed out as representing the majolica made at Forli when the art was in its earliest stages. In no case, however, does the attribution rest upon anything more definite than impulsive speculations or the fruitless comparison of a given specimen with another of equally problematic origin.
