About 1535, Thomas' Smith and John Cheke, then young men of little more than twenty, had been attracted to numfiatiorj " the question of the pronunciation of Greek, and, after studying the Dialogue of Erasmus on that sub- ject (1528), and the treatise of Terentianus, De Litteris et Syllabis, they had come to the conclusion that a reform was necessary.
