Naturally they at first stressed in- struction in the Bible and the vernacular, and taught reading, writing, singing, and conversation in ecclesias- tical Latin. But as the Italian influence began to be felt in the upper countries, although the Hieronymians still held to their moral and religious motives, they broadened the course by the addition of humanistic elements. They retained their Christian training, but added the classic literature and Hebrew.
