His unpopularity was completed by his share in a measure which excited an intense feeling of national humilia- tion. He advised Charles to sell Dunkirk to Louis XIV (1662). Popular opinion jumped to the not unjustifiable conclusion that he had received a share in the proceeds of this disgraceful compact ; his splendid palace in London received the bitter nickname of "Dunkirk House"; and, as Charles, even if he had been personally attached to Clarendon, was not the man to sacrifice an atom of popularity for the purpose of screening a minister, the unfortunate statesman, in 1667, was impeached for high treason and had to go once more into exile.
