Captain Meares joined with other merchants in fitting out two vessels — the Felice and Iphigenia — giving the command of the latter to Captain Douglas, who had already had some experience on the west coast of America. Here Meares examined XI] THE NORTHERN PACIFIC, 1780-180O 281 both the entrance to Juan de Fuca Strait, and also the mainland to the south of it, a high mountain on this receiving from him the name Mount Olympus^ A little north of 46° he noticed an opening where the mouth of the Columbia really is, but, failing to recognise its true character, gave it the name Deception Bay, and the point to the north that of Cape Disappointment.
