Canon Cleary did not intend to remain in the country, but he was detained by the law's delays, and died at New Berne in 1790.
There were a few French Catholics about this time at Washington, North Carolina, but they soon died or with- drew, Walter Hanrahan remaining as the Catholic pioneer.
