The possession of this river was of vital importance to the Confederacy, as by it supplies were brought from Western Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas to the eastern shore of the Mississippi. The Con- federates were left in possession of the Mississippi from Helena to Baton Rouge, which was evacuated by the Federals shortly after Van Dorn's attack.
