For this important post, General Graham selected Sir Archibald with his company of the Ninety- fourth, and a party of the Royal British artillery. For several weeks the DrsTiNduisiiKD MacLeaxs. 377 post was nobly defeiiileil, during a part of the time witlistanding the fire of twenty pieces of... heavy artillery. Although the brave commander personally exposed himself by day and by night on the battery, he was fortunate enough to escape unharmed. Every man iu the little fort aided in pouring incessant shot into the enemy. The band staid immovable, even when every spot was destroyed where they could find shelter; and when they were withdrawn by the British fleet, the spot where Matagorda stood was only a heap of ruins.
For this heroic defense, he was promoted to the rank of major in the Eighty- seventh.
