We pushed on till midnight, the lightning gleams our only light. At roll-call, twelve of Company H re- sponded. We built a fire with some rails, pitched our tents, and slept for about an hour, when we were awak- ened by the rain running under our backs. We reached Jackson Friday night. At Milldale we dug almost all the rifle-pits. The men of the Thirty-fifth Massachu- setts said that the men of the Eleventh had dug more in one hour than they had the whole day.
