This beau- tiful specimen of gothic architecture is one of the most ar- tistic and striking landmarks of the town.
On March 8, 1873, ^he town appropriated the sum of ^^ A History of the Fire Depcwtinent ^500 for the use of the "Narragansett Fire Steam Engine Company, " the money to be expended on "new uniforms, repairs on the Hall, &c. " The Company promptly decided to employ I175 in fitting up and furnishing their hall, and to procure uniforms with the balance. The "uniform com- mittee" were i
...nstructed to purchase a certain number of uniforms and to use the remainder of the money "for skull caps. " Unfortunately the committee's report, when ren- dered, showed a balance of only fifty cents to the Company's credit and, as the records are afterward silent regarding the skull caps, we probably shall never know whether they were ultimately purchased or not.
On August 13, 1873, ^^^ Mechanics' Machine Com- pany's plant, at the corner of Water and Washington Streets, was burned to the ground despite a strenuous effort to save it.
