He was married November 28, 1865, to Henrietta Robins Mack, who has ever since shared with him the labors and honors of his work, and the love of the •people to whom he has ministered. Soon after his marriage he spent several weeks in New Orleans, where he supplied the pulpit of the Unitarian church, as also again for two months in the spring of 1867.
He retained his connection as associate pastor of the St. Louis church, howeve...r, until November, 1867, when he resigned to accept a call to the church then just organized in Portland, Oregon, with which he has ever since been connected. At about the same time he had received a formal call from the New Orleans Digitized by VjOOQ IC 46 SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF church, and the very mail which brought him the call to the church in Portland, Oregon, also brought him a letter (practically equivalent to a call) inviting him to preach for six months in Portland, Maine, in the ))ulpit left vacant by the coming of Rev.
