During the last two years of his high school course he worked, during his leisure hours, in a printing office, and after graduation spent the next three years in teach- ing district schools. In that part of Ohio there is much out-cropping of the Lower Silurian limestones, containing many interesting fossils. This gave Mr. Sherzer an opportunity for geological observations of which he was very fond. His purpose, at that time, was to study civil engineering, as this profession would give him a ch...ance to make a practical study of geology. He entered the University of Michigan in February of 1883, joining the engineering class. He remained in the University until the end of his junior year, when he was elected Principal the Saginaw City high school. He taught mathematics and science there for three years, and then returned to the University and graduated in 1889 in general science. The next year he took post-graduate work and received the degree of Master of Science. In the fall of '91 he taught science in the Houghton high school, and at the same time did special work in the mining MICHIGAN STATE NORMAL SCHOOL.
