Its name at that time was Upland, so called by the Swedes after a pro- vince of Sweden, on the gulf of Bothnia, but the Indian name was Mecoponaca. In the latter part of that year William Penn held his first Legislative Assembly at Chester ; at which time a code of ...laws, that had been prepared in England, was passed, the three counties on Delaware annexed to the province of Penn- sylvania, and the Dutch, Swedes, and other foreigners natura- lized. At that time they had a prison, some remains of which are still to be seen, and the house in which the assembly sat is yet standing. At Chester the first meeting for divine worship ever settled in Pennsylvania, by the Society of Friends, was es- tablished. It was visited by William Edmundson in 1675." Proud, in his history of Pennsylvania, says, that in that year Robert Wade and divers others came over, and that meetings were regularly held there from that time.f Chester is located in a rich fertile district ; the situation is very pleasant ; on the north-east side of a fine mill-stream, navigable a short distance from its mouth.
