Louise must have some explanation. Since Flaubert could not or would not give a satis- factory reason why he would not spend the whole of his life with her she was forced to find one for her- self. She hit on the kindest solution for her vanity a rival. She began to torture her lover and herself with a series of absurd suspicions and jealousies. She was jealous of his writing, of his mother, of Bouilhet. She then departed entirely from the realities of fact and plunged into a series of her own ...fictions. Flaubert had commented on the good looks of Pradier's model. Louise at once began to build a lurid romance on the unlucky remark. The girl was his mistress, had been for years. He came to Paris and visited her in secret without going near Mme Colet. This edifice having been gently demolished she began to build another.
