If this postal service was being performed by the railroads in a manner that was acceptable to the Department and for a compensation that was mu- tually satisfactory, it might be permitted to rest for awhile, but even then it can do its work only for a few years longer. But the railroads are dissatisfied ; the Department is dissatisfied. The expenditures for this service to-day amount to millions of dollars annually, and these are some of the results. The appropriation for the Post Ofiice De- partment, we venture to say, can be reduced three million dollars this year and better service secured for the public, more satisfactory ser- vice for the railroads, and the inauguration of a plan for the future transmission of the mails on these crowded lines of railway that will meet the approbation of everybody, and would expand indefinitely with the growth of the roads.
