Abscesses have become encapsulated and remained quiescent for years without giving rise to serious trouble, but such instances are extremely infrequent. Cases have been reported also in which abscesses in the tem- poro-sphenoidal lobe have drained through a carious opening in the tegmen tympani, and the pus has escaped through the external meatus. A cerebellar abscess has also been reported where the pus forced its way through 352 MANUAL OF OTOLOGY.
